It Takes Two to Talk ®

Workshop for Parents of Children with Language Delays

It Takes Two to Talk®

It Takes Two to Talk® is an evidence-based, family-focused early language intervention for parents of children under 5 years of age with expressive and/or receptive language delays and disorders. Children may or may not have other developmental concerns. This Hanen program recognizes parents as a child’s first teacher and empowers parents to facilitate their child’s communication development in everyday situations. Based on early language intervention research, It Takes Two to Talk® provides concrete strategies that are easy for caregivers to understand and put into practice. You will also have the opportunity to connect with other parents in similar situations and learn from each other.

A pre-program consultation is required for all caregivers interested in participating.

Program includes:

  • 8 interactive group sessions (2.5 hours)

  • 3 individual sessions (1 hour)

  • What is the evidence supporting It Takes Two Talk®?

Several research studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of It Takes Two To Talk®. Across the board, studies have shown that parents change the way they interact with their child as result of the program, and in turn, their child’s language skills improve. Specifically, parents became more responsive and had longer lasting interactions with their child. Children exhibited increased vocabularies, multi-word sentences, and speech sounds. Read more about the evidence here.

  • Will anybody be working directly with my child?

Caregivers are in the best position to support their child’s language development because they get to spend more time with their chid in natural interactions. Children learn best in these natural interactions. While our group leader will not be working directly with your child, you will be trained to use strategies speech-language pathologists use to support children with language delays and disorders. We will help you tailor the strategies to your child’s needs.

  • Can my partner and I alternate attending the sessions?

Consistent attendance is very important in order to get the full benefit of the program. We suggest that up to two primary caregivers attend all sessions when possible. If that is not possible, we recommend one consistent cargiver attend all sessions.
